Chef Tom Collichio in Charleston!!!

I wish I had known....anyway :) Courtesy of Food & Wine Magazine

Day 1: Dinner at McCrady's

Editor's note: Tom Colicchio, the head judge on Bravo's Top Chef (and a Food & Wine Best New Chef 1991), will be blogging every day this week about his road trip from Atlanta.

When I asked Glenn what chefs in the area were doing southern food the old-fashioned way, he named Sean Brock at McCrady's in Charleston.

Since Charleston was our next stop, we took Glenn up on his suggestion and invited Matt and Ted Lee to join us. The Lee Brothers have written extensively for this magazine, know just about everything there is to know about Charleston, and were kind enough to offer to show us around their stomping grounds.

We were treated that night to locally caught stone crab and triggerfish, as well as a house-made charcuterie selection starring Sean Brock's own Yorkshire pigs. Anson Mills grains appeared in two courses during our dinner: Farro and Sea Island Red Peas were served with a rich block of pork belly, and Carolina Gold Rice accompanied swiss chard and lamb with vadouvan. I found Sean Brock's cooking to be a mixture of the traditional and the modern, applying progressive, contemporary techniques and presentations to time-honored southern ingredients and flavors.

Sean prides himself on buying as much as possible from small farmers and fisherman in the Charleston area, and even grows some of his own food at his farm in McClellanville. After our meal at McCrady's we were all eager to meet Sean's growers, so he offered to take us to a friend's farm the next day.

BACCO - A great Italian Treat

So after a recital one night, some friends and I decided we would try a new Italian place, BACCO. What a treat we stumbled into. Small, intimate and immaculate, the ambiance is beautiful with clean white tablecloths and plates and a gorgeos wine wall on the back level. The waiter was very knowledgable and all I can say about the food is AMAZING. True, homemade, Italian food. There is nothing like it. The prices are very reasonable, and the portions are perfect and customizeable (they have small end large portions on most entrees). Their antipasto of mized olives was a great favorite at our table, and the vegetarian lasagna and bolognese were spectacular. Highly recommended for a nice quiet dinner!

Terrace Theatre Makes a Big Hit!

Most of us who have lived here for the last few years remember the closing of the IMAX theatre at Fountain Walk downtown. What a fantastic place to see nature IMAX films like 'Everest' and also to see the rare blockbuster on IMAX like the Harry Potter movies. Well now, the biggest movie theatre in Charleston is back! Mike from Terrace Theatre is now the proud owner of the Hippodrome, which is expandable and retractable to suit his great arts films as well as the blockbuster movies of summer. For the grand opening, they have the new Star Trek film, which after seeing it last night is a must for for old trekkies and trekkers of new!

Finally a mainstream movie house in downtown that will bring Charleston a little bit of everything.

An Oldie but Goodie!

Well everyone around Charleston knows about the the Charleston Crab House on the Wappoo River under the Wappoo Bridge, but I wonder if sometimes places like this are underestimated. We happened to go the other night with a friend cause I was craving seafood :) Anyway, we walked in and all of the signs were upside down, which was strange. We asked the host and he said that they had just undergone a makeover show which had to do with 'flipping', so they flipped all the signs in honor of that. I have to admit, from the last time I had gone, it definitely did look nice. Anyway, we asked for a table outside so we could watch the sunset, which is gorgeous there by the way, and he said that the bugs were really bad (go figure :)), but he could put us right by a huge window inside, which ended up being perfect.

As anyone who has been there knows, at this restaurant, they have the best hushpuppies ever. Not the oniony kind, which alot of people like, but I am not one of them :) We started off with the lowcountry sampler (calamari, mozzarella sticks and coconut shrimp), which was really good. I loved their calamari cause it wasn't greasy at all (and being Greek, I'm picky about that). The food came out pretty quickly. One of us got the hamburger, which he loved. I got my favorite thing, with was the friend shrimp platter, and the other ordered the Lowcountry Boil Platter. All of the food was really wonderful. None of the fried food was overfried, the steamed shrimp looked wonderful and smelled better, and the sausage was nice and mild.

I still have to say that watching the sunset and watching the boats was the best part of the night...in addition to the food.

And even better, we found out that they have a $5 corkage fee, so another great place to bring your own wine for dinner!

Enjoy your week and weekend!

Red Wine in the Summer?

So Summer is almost upon us, and with the weather starting to warm up, so many are starting to put their red wines into storage in order to partake of the summery, crisp, chilled white wines that seem to go along so well with the ocean breezes.

Well if you are anything like Baron and I, our red wines stay in circulation all year around. And if many of you don't know (and you can ask Joe at WineStyles), but there are some red wines which can be served very slightly chilled.

In this spirit, we thought that we would highlight for you our favorite red wines (all available at WineStyles)

Merlot
14 Hands ~ smooth and slightly sweet, but just earthy enough to have some soul

Pinot Noir
Stephen Vincent ~ the smoothest Pinot Noir we have ever tasted.
Salentein - sweeter and lighter, a true Pinot

Shiraz
Piping Shrike - very bold and earthy, a striking Shiraz with alot of kick!
Cypress Vineyards - strong, stout and rich flavor without any bitterness

Cabernet Sauvignon
Calistoga - a rich, bold Cab that goes well with any steak dinner!
Robertson Winery - smoky and bacony, yet smooth enough to even drink alone.

Malbec
Malma - a hearty spicy malbec Argentina would be proud of!

Montepulciano
Della Scala - a light sweet red for any occasion

Sangiovese
Il Bastardo - a perfect medium bodied wine with enough sweetness and spice!

Pinotage
Robertson Winery - perfect with cheese! Smoky and Bacony.

Red Blends
Foxy - the perfect wine to drink anytime. Slightly sweet and earthy.
Kaesler GSM - a robust spicy wine that is perfect with dinner!
Tormarescu - a very nice slightly sweet blend to go with anything.

So don't put your reds in the cellar just yet....enjoy them for your summer cookouts instead of beer and for dinners with those you love!

Movies at Marion Square is BACK!!!!
This is something that I look forward to in the early fall, and the city is giving us an early treat with 4 weeks of movies in Marion Square starting this week on April 17th. You can curl up on a blanket and enjoy the wonderful vendors that the city brings with food and drink (please don't bring your own). Pets are welcome. The movie starts at sundown, so get there early to get a good seat.
This week is TWILIGHT!!
The other dates are April 24th, May 8th and 15th

Also, there is a new restaurant on James Island that I'm dying to go to having seen the one in I'On - O'Brien's Pub. Now I am a sucker for a good Irish Pub, so this is a must try for me. If you have been to the new location in the Publix shopping center of Folly road, please let us know what your experience was like!

Saturday Walks in Charleston

With the weather being as beautiful as it has been, it is almost impossible to stay inside. Lately, we have taken to walking downtown and discovering all the beautiful places that we don't get to see everyday, especially as someone who has lived in Charleston all her life! Well this saturday was exploring the beautiful houses and shops south of Market Street. Churches, Washington Park (which is just as beautiful today as it was when my mother used to play there), waterfront park, Catfish Row and the alleys between Church and Meeting Streets (which are more than you probably think). One of the things we stumbled on on vendue was the fact that Rooftop was open for brunch! Who would have thought? I only remember seeing lines of people at happy hour trying to get in the elevator. So we went, and let me say it was such a lovely time there...Coffee and Beer (yes I know, a strange combination), a fantastic spicy quesadilla, great atmostphere with a view of the water. The service was great and we thoroughly enjoyed it! Next time you are roaming downtown at 11am and don't know where to go, try it.

Thanks

The Farmer's Market is Back!

If you were in downtown charleston this weekend and wondered what was going on in Marion Square, it was the Farmer's Market in its opening weekend. Every saturday morning from 8am-2pm local vendors or all types set up their booths in marion square to show their wares to the public. There are restaurants that set up booths for breakfast and lunch, including my favorite booth of all, Charleston Crepe Company. There is shrimp and grits, crepes, fresh lemonade, peanuts, jams and jellies and much much more. There are beautiful arts and crafts, including Pompeii jewelry who creates beautiful designs from the iron gatework that is so unique in Charleston. And to beat it all, you can get fresh flowers, fruits and vegetables every week from local gardens and farms. You cant beat the farmers market on a saturday morning. Dogs are welcome! Come out enjoy Charleston in Spring and support your local businesses!

Thanks

From the Boston Globe about the performance of Mozart's" Die Zauberflote": "Barbara Kilduff fearlessly threw off the Queen of the Night's two punishing arias and she made a bold and vivacious impression." Barbara Kilduff was Adele in the 25th Anniversary Gala recording of "Die Fledermaus" with Julius Rudel conducting for the MET. "...Barbara Kilduff is the perfect Adele" from the Opera Magazine.

A weekend of wine and celebration

This past weekend was one of the most relaxing in months. Starting out with an afternoon at WineStyles at Towne Center where we had a white wine class followed by a great wine tasting of some great new wines...new summer whites and lush reds (Il bastardo and The Red Mullet being my favorites - and no, the word mullet doesn't have anything to do with hair :) ). Another great treat we had was ruby stout (infused with port wine), a lovely Rousanne (very rare wine due to the persnickety vines it comes from from Zaca Mesa winery), almond champagne brought by a friend to the class, and a lovely crisp Riesling named Blue Fish, which was very light and refreshing. We ended up getting lunch in there for the afternoon from Orlando's Pizza on Daniel Island, a traditional Jersey pizza, which if you haven't had, is really wonderful and filling!

Sunday was encompassed by a Church Celebration Sunday at First (Scots) Presbyterian on this 5th Sunday of Lent. First Scots was founded in 1731 as the first Presbyterian Church in Charleston. Founded by 12 families, many of whose descendants are still active in the church today, the church thrives on worship and fellowship, and today was no exception. There was only one service for the church this day, followed by a procession down to Hibernian Hall for a traditional southern sunday picnic with all the trimmings! Yummy! This outing was spurred by the Generations Campaign at the Church for new buildings as well as the need for fellowship and truly doing things as a church family, something that is duly missed these days. I haven't seen the pictures yet, but I'm sure that there was fun had by all!

Best Greek Food in Charleston!

So being of Greek Heritage, I have been eating moussaka and pastichio since I could chew :)

No really, its hard to please Greeks in a restaurant...there are lots of restaurants in town that people love, but we tried Samos Taverna a couple of weeks ago, and I have to say, I was totally impressed and pleased.

We had a lovely bottle of wine (that we brought), calamari and a cheese plate as an appetizer (with a heavenly feat and manouri on it) ....not sure the meal could have gotten better, but it did...the pork souvlaki was tender, juicy, wonderfully seasoned, a good portion, and served with greek horiatiki (spinach cooked in olive oil and lemon), which was the perfect side for the meal, as well as totally authentic.

The atmosphere was amazing, the service wonderful, the valet service greatly needed and appreciated..

After speaking with Andy, one of the owners of the restaurant, it was clear that we would be returning as often as the wallet would allow...

what a great meal :)

Yassou!

The Best Wine Shop in Charleston, WineStyles

Have you ever gone to winetastings not having a clue what you are drinking, much less tasting....Well we started going almost a year ago cause it seemed like a fun thing to do..learn about wines, taste some, have some appetizers too...great start to an evening, right? Well, let me tell you that it depends on where you go.

Having gone to a couple of places and trying them out for awhile, we literally stumbled into a wineshop called WineStyles at Towne Center in the middle of december 2008. They had just opened, it was a saturday afternoon, and they were having a tasting...well first off, the shop itself was large, really beautiful, had lots of cool accessories, and most of all, had wines on the wall so you could find what you were looking for (even if you weren't quite sure). The other big thing that hit us was the warm welcome that we had when we came in...We were greeted, served (not pestered or ignored), and really had the feeling of being welcomed, which in these times really can be hard to come by...

So go figure, we went back...and have been going at least once a week ever since...Between the great wine, food, classes, atmosphere, and great chats with Martha and Joe, the owners, who are some of the coolest people we know, it is by far some of the best afternoons....

They have such a great selection of wines that they handpick and taste as well as awesome cheese and nut trays that we enjoy frequently....

Come and Join Us for a glass or a bottle!!

For your information, they have tastings every thursday from 5:30 - 7:30 and saturday from 2-7.
